Forbes’s chief operating officer has a straightforward message for companies as the Trump administration ends: Don’t hire Trump White House officials.
Randall Lane wrote an opinion article for the outlet published on Thursday, in which he argued that the president’s spokespeople have “debase[d] themselves,” so companies shouldn’t “let the chronic liars cash in on their dishonesty.”
He argued that everyone from Sean Spicer to Sarah Huckabee Sanders to Kellyanne Conway to Kayleigh McEnany don’t “merit the same golden parachute” that former press secretaries such as Joe Lockhart, Ari Fleischer, and Jay Carney typically enjoy. Lane noted that Forbes would question the credibility of any company that chooses to employ any Trump official.
“Let it be known to the business world: Hire any of Trump’s fellow fabulists above, and Forbes will assume that everything your company or firm talks about is a lie,” he wrote. “We’re going to scrutinize, double-check, investigate with the same skepticism we’d approach a Trump tweet. Want to ensure the world’s biggest business media brand approaches you as a potential funnel of disinformation? Then hire away.”
Lane added that his stance is not an example of “cancel culture,” which he called “a societal blight,” and that it’s not politically motivated because “this standard needs to apply to liars from either party.”
A handful of Trump administration officials have resigned this week after a swath of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol building on Wednesday at the time that Congress was certifying President-elect Joe Biden’s electoral victory. The president urged his supporters to do so. The rioters fought with law enforcement officials, which led to five deaths, a lockdown of the Capitol, and dozens of arrests.
Deputy national security adviser Matt Pottinger; Stephanie Grisham, chief of staff to first lady Melania Trump; deputy press secretary Sarah Matthews; and White House social secretary Rickie Niceta all announced their resignations after the demonstrations.
